Rodent Control

Do you think you may have a rodent problem? A few of the main signs that you have a rodent problem are gnaw marks, droppings, and scampering noises. In addition, they cause considerable structural damage to your home or building, and will tunnel into insulation inside of walls and attics. Stanley Pest Control will evaluate your situation and be able to tailor a comprehensive plan for removal given the severity of the infestation.

Mice

House mice can use even dime-sized cracks to gain entry into your home or building, making them one of the most troublesome and costly rodents in the United States. They seek areas of clutter, such as attics or basements, because they provide excellent hiding places for these pests to build nests.

House mice are secretive and very cautious, making them harder to control. Their droppings can contaminate food and disease can be transmitted if the population is not controlled. Because house mice are so small, they are able to enter homes and buildings much more easily than rats. As a result, mice infestations are more common than rat infestations.

Rats

The Roof Rat, commonly referred to as black rats or ship rats, gets it's name from its tendency to find shelter in areas like attics, trees, fences and anything off the ground. They are the smaller of the two major rat species in the world. The Norway Rat is larger in size and is also referred to as the brown rat. Rats tend to become a bigger problem during the winter, but regardless of time they can be a pester and a serious health hazard.

Rat Facts

  • Rats can carry more than 60 communicable diseases including Hantavirus, leptospirosis, typhus, meningitis and rat-bite fever. They can transfer diseases through their saliva, urine, feces, rodent bites, or through fleas or ticks that have fed on an infected rodent (like the bubonic plague!).
  • Rats can tread water for up to three days. Often times, if a rat is flushed down a toilet alive it will make its way back to the surface using the same route.
  • Their teeth never stop growing! Teeth of a rat grow 5 inches a year. They can gnaw through electrical wire, cinder blocks and lead pipe.
  • Rats can squeeze through openings as small as 13 mm in diameter? about half an inch!

Control

Effective rodent control in Southern California involves a multi-step approach. There are three main steps including sanitation, exclusion, and population reduction. First, a comprehensive inspection of the foundation and roof trim is necessary to figure out the severity of the infestation. Sanitation and exclusion are critical in rodent control measures. When an infestation already exists, baiting is a great population reduction technique that is almost always necessary.

Our rodent control program has four important steps:

  1. A thorough rodent inspection to identify the species, where they're nesting, and what factors are attracting them.
  2. Creating effective sanitation so that rodents such as rats and mice are denied both food and hiding places.
  3. Eliminating all potential entry points.
  4. Reducing the rodent population by exclusion, baiting, and trapping.
